A few blocks west of the Post Office, along the
Bay Road and near the ferry dock on the waterfront,
stands the Public Market. Although it operates
on a daily basis, Friday evenings and early Saturday
mornings are the busiest days at the market. This
is also the best time for visitors to witness
the abundance of exotic food stalls and purchase
all sorts of fresh fruits and vegetable and fresh
fish caught just hours before.
In the traditional West Indian
style, the local ladies wakeup early in the morning
and travel from all around the island to sell
their fruits and vegetables in the Public Market.
You can sometimes find up to three generations
of women behind one food stall. The men also are
up at the break of dawn to collect the fish pots
they set the day before and sell the fish they
caught out in front of the market.
The Public Market is a good
place to meet the friendly locals and experience
the lively chatter that accompanies every food
stall. Bargaining is not common on St. Kitts,
except at the Public Market. It is a mosaic of
exotic and colorful sights, sounds and aromas.
It is definitely worth a visit.
